| Westfield Wanderers F.C. was founded in 1990. It is a true community club and currently has over 300 local children, youths, and adults, involved in football ranging from 4 to 44 years old. We pride ourselves on welcoming boys and girls into our teams of all abilities, not just the elite, giving everybody a chance to play. There are around 60 volunteers giving their time and effort to the club and the local community. The season of 2004/2005 saw 27 boys and girls sides from under 8 to under 18 taking part in local league competition as well as nationwide tournaments. In previous seasons we have been fortunate and good enough to have be winners at both levels at a variety of age groups. This has seen some of our players attract the attention of professional clubs through the scouting system. Our girls teams have grown stronger as the season has progressed and we are expecting that by next season we will have teams at under 10 and under 16 level in addition to our three teams currently playing at under 12 and under 14. The 'pee-wee' section - as we call it - for the 4 to 7 age group is also flourishing in its first year with 32 members. These players as they reach the correct age, will be moved into teams that play in league competition. The club is currently involved with 5 local schools at junior and high school level, providing coaching help and equipment on a regular basis. The club has been involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award and in the Young Offenders Rehabilitation Programme providing opportunities and help to both. We have also been awarded the accolade of an FA Charter Standard Club. We provide the chance for all of our volunteers and players to attend courses to gain qualifications and some of our players from 15 upwards have become qualified referees through courses paid for by the club. These players then have the opportunity to become involved with working with younger age groups and gaining coaching experience which may be beneficial to them in their choice of career. The help we receive from many local sponsors allows to continue with this year on year and we are grateful to them for their support. All their names appear in literature we produce through the season including handbooks and newsletters, These sponsors have shown a commitment to supporting grass roots football which enables all of our kids in this club to continue playing at all levels. As a community club, in the true sense of the word, we feel it is possible for every person, be they young or old, to attain their standard of excellence and the concept and the attainment of success does not have to be at the exclusion of anyone. |
